    What type of programs does Black Girls CODE offer?

    Black Girls CODE offers the following programs:
    One day workshops, enrichment activities, summer camp, and Code Clubs. Each program has a specific subject in five program domains: virtual reality, robotics, game design, web design and mobile app development. Dates and location vary by chapter city.

    How do I apply to attend a Black Girls CODE workshop?

    Please visit the Program/Events page to register a girl to attend the event. For more information or to volunteer, please visit our website, sign up for our mailing list or follow us on Facebook or Twitter to receive updates about upcoming events in your area.

    How much do Black Girls CODE workshops cost?

    Our costs vary from $35 – $100, depending on workshop. Each cost is listed on the Eventbrite registration page. You may request a scholarship on the registration page. Please note, there are a limited number of scholarships for each event. Watch your email for a status update on your scholarship request. If you are offered a scholarship, there will be instructions included in the email Parents or community members can reach out to Black Girls CODE for information on how to apply for a scholarship.

    Is there a GPA requirement I have to meet to be accepted into a Black Girls CODE workshop?

    No. There is not a GPA requirement.

    My participant has limited or no technical skills/experience. Do you require a certain level of technical experience to attend a Black Girls CODE workshop?

    No. Black Girls CODE workshops welcome all girls (ages 7-17) of all skill levels. Our workshops provide hands-on experience that are led by supportive technical instructors who can help increase the participant’s abilities.

    Do students need to bring their own laptops to attend workshops?

    Students are provided with computers and other necessary equipment during Black Girls CODE workshops.

    I don't live in one of the cities where workshops are being offered. How can I get a Black Girls CODE chapter started in my city?

    Black Girls CODE hosts pop-up workshops in cities nationwide and currently has 15 chapters across the U.S. Interested in bringing Black Girls CODE to your city please email Black Girls CODE at future@blackgirlscode.com with the subject line: “Help Needed: Interested in Bringing BGC to My City” for information on starting a chapter.

    I am a parent/guardian. May I attend a Black Girls CODE workshop with my daughter?

    Black Girls CODE workshops are exclusively for girls between the ages of 7 and 17. This is to foster a safe space for girls due to the alarming statistics about girls in technology.
    National Center for Women & Information Technology Statistics:
    Girls make up 27 percent of all Advanced Placement (AP) computer science test takers in secondary schools.
    19% of 2016 Computer and Information Sciences bachelor’s degree recipients were female

    Do students have to be Black to join a workshop?

    Our workshops are open to all girls of any race and ethnicity. Our focus is to create a community that welcomes young women of color, Black and Latina.

    How can I sponsor a girl for a Black Girls CODE workshop?

    Anyone can sponsor a girl. Visit the Program/Events page to click on any of our active events. You also can send in your donation to our Headquarters. When students apply for a scholarship, they will receive your donation to cover their workshop cost.

    How many girls has BGC trained or reached?

    Since 2011, BGC has reached over 14,000 girls. The population increases annually.

    How can my organization sponsor one or more Chapters?

    Many of our sponsors support one or more of our National Chapters. Increased sponsors mean we can expand. Certainly, in states where only one Chapter currently exists, we would welcome expansion greatly. If you would like to help, or would like further information, please contact future@blackgirlscode to learn more.     How do Employee Resource Groups support BGC? How do other BGC organizations sponsor or support BGC?

    BGC has a Volunteer Coordinator to explore opportunities for ERGs. Activities can range from providing scholarships to girls from low-income backgrounds; offering workshop space or a visit to an operational unit within the organization with matching speaker; offering internships; problem-solving competitions/fairs and much more. Your involvement can be in one or all domains of activity.

    How does BGC build community with their programming?

    BGC is driven by the support of volunteers within our local city chapters Please visit our volunteer page to learn how BGC has connected with communities nationally and internationally. Several of our chapters also describe connections they make with industry e.g. Memphis Chapter. As our girls evolve, graduate and enter STEM and other relevant professions, so our community growth will be consolidated – with your help as a sponsor of course.
